Harry Walters- Hazards To Motorcycle Riders

Harry Walters – Hazards To Motorcycle Riders: As you are out there enjoying your passion…that is riding your motorcycle, there are some things out there that may hurt you, if you are not prepared or aware of what you should do. Some things, that may cause your motorcycle to become unstable, may be your fault. Consider the following:

  • Rain grooves, bridge gratings although these are not the same, they do transmit the same signal to the rider. The rider must be aware of how the motorcycle will react to these surfaces and should remain relaxed. The rider should not stiff-arm the handle bar steering.
  • Railroad tracks railroad tracks should be approached at a 90- degree angle. If other hazards prevent you from doing this, be extra careful and diligent to changes in control. Remain calm.
  • Sand, dirt, and/or gravel the front wheel should be light and roll over the hazard, not plow through it. This is accomplished with the operator transferring his weight (center of gravity) to the footpads/floorboard, or to the rear of the seat.  The rider should downshift, but maintain a safe speed. (It is recommended that you practice off rode riding on all types of motorcycles. There are other posts that cover the subject.)
  • Branches, tree limbs, etc. the rider must again transfer weight (center of gravity) of the motorcycle. Lift up the handlebars to decompress the front shocks, and accelerate enough to surmount the obstacle. The obstacle should be approached as close to a 90-degree angle as possible.

Special Situations:

Blowouts

  • Shift weight from the damaged tire.
  • Do not make any radical movements.
  • Ease off of the throttle
  • Hold the handlebars firmly
  • Use the brake on the good wheel as needed.(lightly)

Stuck Throttle:

  • Shut off the engine using the engine cut-off switch.
  • Squeeze clutch
  • Apply brakes
  • Try to free the throttle

Animals:

  • Slow down
  • Downshift
  • As the animal approaches, speed up.

Wind:

  • Identify strong gust areas in advance.
  • Grip the handlebars firmly.
  • Adjust your position in the roadway based on the wind direction.
  • Lean slightly into the wind.
  • Be ready to countersteer.

Special Equipment and Loads:

  • Be sure to balance the weight of your equipment left and right.
  • Equipment should not interfere with steering or visibility.
  • Check the owner’s manual to determine the gross motor vehicle weight and subtract the vehicle dry weight to determine carrying capacity. Remember the weight of fluids such as gasoline, oil, as well as additional equipment must be counted.

Effects of overloading:

  • Instability
  • Poor braking
  • Structural failures
  • Overheating of tires

Most of the above hazards should be practiced often. You can simulate the hazard or emergency in a safe area, just like pilots do. A lot of people who ride motorcycles, panic or freeze, when there is an emergency. The Hurt Study showed that the Number 3 cause of motorcycle crashes was the operator “froze”, or “did nothing”, to try to avoid the hazard. From all of my years of teaching police officers motorcycle riding and instructor, I have seen that happen a few times on the track. Motorcyclist, it is very important to practice to ride! You do not want to wait for the emergency to happen, and have to react for the very first time, on two wheels. If you practice the emergency often, before it happens, you will have a better chance of reacting the proper way.

Well folks, that’s it for now until the next post.  For more information, please return to: http://squidoo.com/harry-walters .

Harry Walters- How Do You Handle a High Speed Weave On A Motorcycle?

Hey There! Harry here, hoping that you are having a great day! Motorcycle safety and operations are very important to the operator-rider. Personally, I believe that all motorcycle riders should learn and practice as much as they can on a motorcycle. It creates muscle memory! It is muscle memory, that will kick in during an emergency situation. What ever you have dumped in to memory, will come out in the “gnat’s ass nano second” reacting to an emergency or a treat!

A WEAVE is a high-speed wander, which commences at the rear of the motorcycle. It is a rear end oscillation, in which you will feel in your stomach, an un-easy feeling from side to side. It is similar to riding a motorcycle over a grated steel bridge, or a highway, which has parallel scraps in it, except all of this is in the rear of the motorcycle. When the wander is severe, the whole motorcycle will weave from side to side in a snake-like and most alarming manner. Weave usually occurs at speeds 60mph and above and is particularly likely to occur on curves when the motorcycle is leaning and is under stress.

CORRECTION! It is simple, however you do need to practice… remember muscle memory!

  • Do not change speed, by accelerating or braking!
  • Lay your chest and head while looking ahead, on the gas tank. (Changes center of gravity.
  • Gradually, slow down to a stop and locate the problem if possible. If not, tow it.

So what caused it?

Here is a list of things that can cause a weave:

  • Improper loading! (be mindful of weight limits in saddle bags, trunk, bike)
  • Tire wear

Tire inflation

  • Mis-matched tires
  • Rider weight
  • Passenger weight
  • Weight distribution
  • Pavement seams
  • Surface conditions
  • Worn or loose motorcycle parts
  • Motorcycle design

Ride Safe My Friends! Pre-check your motorcycle before every ride!

Why Do We “Do It” To Ourselves Or Love Ones? by Harry Walters

Hey There! I just had to get on this lap top and write this post, after seeing too many close calls on the way to the office! People pulling out in front of others, who had to slam on brakes, skidding tires! A fruit stand sales person killed last evening, by a driver who lost control of their car! It made me wonder, “what were he or she doing, to lose control of the car?

Look at my math list and the results:

  • Texting + Driving a 2000lb vehicle= A Bad Wreck!
  • Speed + Swerving Your Car= A Bad Wreck!
  • Drinking Alcoholic Beverage + Driving = Bad Wreck and / or  Arrest!
  • Speed + Traffic + Motorcycle = A Bad Wreck!
  • Hot Day + Leaving Your Kids Inside A Car = A Very Tragic Day!
  • Driving A Car + No Seat Belt = Lost of Life
  • Limited Motorcycle Skills + Very Powerful Motorcycle = A Bad Wreck!

It is sad to say, in too many cases, the result has been the same!

Stop putting yourself in a situation , that usually has tragic results!

Motorcyclist, What Will It Take For You to Ride Safe?

Hey There! Harry Walters here. I hope you are having a great day so far. So the question is about “riding a motorcycle safe?” MOST motorcycle riders do! I see you and train you all the time. I am worried about the few that don’t as I do see the results investigating motorcycle crashes. So sad… most of them, the motorcycle rider brought it on his or her self!

Ok here are some reminders:

  • Two wheels belong on the ground at the same time!
  • Cutting in and out of moving traffic may get you there fast, however your reaction time is short to non-existent!
  • Bike too powerful for the new rider!
  • Bike too big for the new rider!
  • Motorcycle operator + drinking alcoholic beverage= disaster!
  • Motorcycle operator + drugs in system= disaster!
  • Famous last words, “hey, look at me!” or “hey watch me!”
  • Running from the police even if he is not chasing you!
  • Speed too fast!
  • Skills not mastered or practiced!

“Motorcyclist, I’m speaking to the few, “What will it take for you to ride safe?” ONLY You can answer that! I am just a person , who wants to see you ride safe, and see less ” heart breaking motorcycle crash pictures across my desk”!

Take Care! Ride Safe!
